Cherie Ann Haeger,
Ph.D., a professor of English at
Gannon University, 55, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Hamot Medical Center.
Daughter of Irene Mohardt Haeger of Winter
Haven, Fla., and the late Henry R. Haeger.
Dr. Haeger received a bachelor of arts degree at
Marygrove Colledge in Detroit, Mich., and a master's degree and doctorate in literature
from Dusquesne University. She begain teaching English at Gannon in 1967 and in 1970 she
became assistant professor of English. She
became an associate professor in 1975 and later became a professor.
She specialized in Medieval and Renaissance British literature, teaching in all
three genres - drama, poetry and fiction - for almost 30 years. She won a meritorious
achievement award in 1994 from the
Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for a full-length play she wrote called
"An Odyssey," an adaptation of Homer's epic. She had also written two one-act
plays: "As Stars in Heavens" and "Balancing Eggs on the Vernal
Equinox."
Dr. Haeger enjoyed writing poetry and had many of her poems and articles published. She
participated in the Sewanee Writer's Conference in 1996 and was a member of Spenser
Society and had co-edited the Spenser Newsletter. She was a member of the boards of the
Northwest Pennsylvania Council Teachers of English, the Western Pennsylvania Symposium on
World Literature, Modern Language Association, Milton Society and the Renaissance Society
of America. She had also received several awards, including the National Defease Education
Act Fellowship, NEH Summer Seminars for College Professors and Junior Fellow Southeastern
Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
In addition to her mother, survivors include an aunt, Joan Barnette of Redford Township,
Mich; and members of her Book Club. |
